With more than 140 professionals trained in civil, structural, mechanical, electrical, construction engineering and architectural services, Knight is able to provide innovative design and management solutions to both public and private clients from our offices in Onalaska, Wisconsin and our Illinois locations in Chicago, Springfield and Bolingbrook.

The Chicago office is seeking an experienced Structural Engineer to lead project management and design for a variety of project assignments including and not limited to transportation related design with a focus and interest in bridge and rail design as well as public building design.

The individual must be an enthusiastic and motivated candidate who is interested and experienced in project management, marketing, and the structural engineering of a variety of structure types, the majority of which would be related to railroad bridges. Potential to perform in a lead capacity, excellent written, oral communications skills, and a familiarity of industry practices and regulations are required. Must also possess a thorough knowledge of current technology and be able to select and apply appropriate engineering software for use on project. Must understand the financial aspects and responsibilities of managing a project or projects and be able to meet project financial goals while maintain clients’ needs and schedule. Many assignments involve CAE (computer aided engineering)/CAD (computer aided design) applications. The selected candidate will primarily be responsible for the following duties:


  • Minimum 10 years’ experience in railroad bridge engineering

  • Strong technical skills in structural analysis and design of various types of railroad bridge structures for railroad agencies, companies and DOT’s

  • Experience with heavy rail (Metro) transit systems and other comparable rail systems desired

  • Experience with structural engineering solutions to transit facilities (including stations, viaducts, tunnels, and/or maintenance facilities)

  • Experience with Class I railroads and/or transit agencies desirable

  • Familiar with AREMA (The American Railway Engineering and Maintenance-of-Way Association), and AASHTO (American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials), LRFD (Load and Resistance Factor) design method
  • Skill and knowledge of Federal Transit Authority (FTA) standards, Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) standards
  • Leads other Engineers and design personnel in technical excellence and growth within their field of expertise and in the Quality Improvement Pro
  • Ensures compliance of design with all applicable codes and regulations, providing the seal and signature of the Professional Engineer or Structural Engineer when required by statute or contract.
  • Leads and Interacts directly with Clients and Client organizations in scheduled design meetings. Provides in-field technical consultations and problem solving for un-scheduled field construction site visits when required.
  • Helps determine budget estimates and staffing requirements for the defined scope and schedule. May assist with other administrative and technical duties

Experience and Skills:

The successful candidate will have the following:

  • BS in Civil/Structural Engineering (Required)

  • MS in Civil/Structural Engineering (Preferred)

  • IL SE license (Required)
  • IL PE license (Preferred)

  • 10-15 years of experience in structural engineering
